Background on Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE).
First enacted by Congress in 1975, the CAFE program mandates
that all automakers selling in the U.S. meet certain fuel
economy levels. The current Model Year (MY) 2007 standards
are set at 27.5 mpg for passenger cars and 22.2 mpg for light
trucks.
